Perfect Speaker for Small Desk, April 2, 2011
    By

My computer setup is on a small AnthroCart table (about 3 ft by 2 ft). A scanner occupies the left third, the keyboard/mouse and 19″ monitor occupy the remainder. These speakers are a perfect fit. Their small footprint allows them to sit behind the outer edges of the monitor at the back of the table top. The power button and volume control are located on the top of one of the speakers; easy access; no fumbling around on the sides or back of a speaker. The 2.5 watts power is more than adequate for use with a PC. If you are a gamer who needs lots of power and extended low range or someone who listens to symphonic music and needs great “presence”, these are not the speakers for you. But if you need unobtrusive speakers for your PC with clear, crisp sound these are what you’ve been looking for (remember too that you can use the mixer/enhancements settings on your PC sound setup to change the characteristics the sound).

My wife had been resisting buying speakers because she didn’t want to spend money on them, but for less than $10, I convinced her that these were worth the risk. (I bought a previous model for my sister for Christmas last year and she told me that hers are performing admirably.) I don’t know how they can be beat for the money, as long as you are realistic in your expectations. For example, you will not be able to connect these to your TV to have a great surround sound experience. If you are a gamer, these are probably going to sound “tinny” when you blow the guy in the bunker to smithereens and the bass tries to kick in. Bass in general is not going to be great. But, if you are listening to Pandora in the background as you work, or watching a TV show on Hulu, these will do the trick.

This product is small. I was expecting the speakers to be a little bit bigger than they were. With that said, I am pleased that they are as compact as they are. In addition, I am grateful that the power cord is just a basic, two-prong connector. Many speakers that I have had in the past have had rather large connectors, or a large power supply in the middle. This is not the case with these. The cords themselves are not super long, but I would guess that they are about 5′-6′ each (the power cord and the speaker jack.) This was plenty for me to be able to plug in to my power source and the computer. The cord length between the two speakers is similar in length.

Overall I am pleased and I would highly recommend this product.

Speakers sound ok, top-mounted controls are convenient, and the power cord ends in
a standard 2-prong AC plug, so there’s no wall transformer to deal with.

But all the cords are permanently attached to the speakers, so if you will be setting
these up and taking them down frequently, the cords are a hassle.

There’s a funky 4-wire flat ribbon cable that attaches the 2 speakers together. Then
there’s the AC cord and the audio input cable with mini-stereo plug.
