    Infinity By Harman – High-End Equipment, July 3, 2011

Many probably don’t recognize the Harman name following Infinity, but they should instantly recognize Harman Kardon for high-end equipment. Yes, the Harman following Infinity is the same Harman that founded Harman Karden over fifty years ago and made the brand synonymous with the best to be found.

More than a few years back I had purchased a set of very good Kenwood KFC-X698 speakers. They were seldom used and only then with a Kenwood eXcelon headunit. That gave them a good break-in for another vehicle using a recent addition of a 4-channel Kenwood KAC-6404 amplifier – offering 40 watts of RMS power per channel in that car. I can say they really came alive for the first time in years – offering improved bass, sweeter highs, and clarity that even the most discriminating listener would appreciate.

Are the Infinity’s better? The answer is a clear-cut yes! I paid less for the Infinity Kappa 693.9i speakers through Amazon than I paid for the KFC-X698 Kenwood speakers years back, and the Infinity’s have a higher RMS wattage range that allows for the same clarity at higher volume. The 2-Ohm voice coil even gives the added advantage of allowing my X600F amplifier to run higher than its rated 100 RMS wattage power level for cleaner music boosts at high levels, and that added boost is welcome where these speakers are mounted. At lower levels there isn’t that much difference between the Infinity’s and the Kenwoods, but crank the headunits to one-quarter volume and the difference is amazing. Sure, there is a lot of difference between the amplifiers, but you’ve got to have speakers to match their power levels. With the same wattage output at 20 watts from the amplifiers, the Infinity Kappa speakers sound no different from the KFC-698 speakers. But, start raising the power level from there and these Infinity Kappa’s set themselves apart as the Kenwoods start into increasing loss of clarity with each volume increase. The Infinity Kappa by Harmon are more solid in cage construction and materials use than even the newer KFC-X693 rated similarly to the Infinity speakers here. This better construction makes a huge difference in performance over many speakers by significantly reducing extraneous vibration.

There is no doubt the crossovers attached to the Kenwood KFC-X698 speakers work well, but the Infinity Kappa speakers also have their own crossovers that work just as well. The added tweeter boost feature and tilted feature on these Infinity Kappa speakers is more of a novelty to me, but it’s a nice addition the Kenwoods don’t offer. For the difference in price here at Amazon, the performance, and quality of construction, the Infinity Kappa 693.9i were a no brainer for selection with my system. I have excellent performance from them – and beyond what some other manufacturers have claimed for their speakers.

Into magnetic drivers? These Infinity Kappa use permanent ceramic magnets – probably Barium Ferrite (commonly used in subwoofers) which is heavy, more humidity stable, and corrosion resistant for long life.

    Manufacturer rating:

    sensitivity – 96dB
    freq. response – 35Hz.- 30,000Hz.
    mounting depth – 3 1/4″

    This system:

    Kenwood KDC-X790 headunit
    Kenwood KTC-HR300 HD radio tuner
Kenwood X600F class AB 4-channel amplifier (100 watts RMS per channel at 4-Ohms)
Infinity Kappa 693.9i 6X9″ rear speakers (110 watts RMS each, 2-Ohm)
Alpine SPR-60c 6.5″ front speakers (110 watts RMS each, 3.3-Ohm)

These speakers are truly great sounding speakers. I ordered mine about a week ago. The shipping was 3-15 days and they came in three (all the way from CA to PA). However this doesnt contribute at all to my 5 star rating because I’m rating the product, not Amazon.

I installed them three days ago. They are fairly heavy, with a massive magnet underneath (infinitys are known for this). They are very easy to set up once u get them in the speaker locations in your car. All you do is split the speaker wire, strip it, and put it in the + and – slots.

Now onto the actual sound of the speakers. I ordered mine hoping that i would not need any subs. Luckily, the speakers have a great sounding bass. The bass is extremely accurate, as mentioned in a few other reviews, but not a bad accurate. When i read those reviews i thought that this “accurate bass” was not a deep, car shaking bass, but it is. It sounds great. Also, whomever said in those reviews that the bass isn’t great, I dont know what they were hearing. It sounds amazing. Great bass people isn’t those stupid subs that shake the road and just sound ridiculous. The highs are also very good. I havent even installed my front door panel speakers and i would be fine with just my 6×9 infinitys. There is also a little button to lower the db by 3 if you want, but i just left it without the -3 db.

In conclusion, get these speakers. For the money, they are great. Im sure there are better ones out there, but if you want better, plan on spending over 250 for a set.

Side note; I have heard they sound even better with an amp. You may want to consider this. (Im too cheap to justify one haha)

This is one of the best 6×9 pairs you can buy for under 200 dollars. Efficiency, power, clarity, balance, quality, all of these descriptors come to mind when describing this product. This will be mys second par of this series of Kappa. Makes a world of difference when it comes to sound in your vehicle. I am installing this into my second vehicle which is a convertible. So having a strong sound system is imperative. I would also recommend buying a four channel amp for these if you are looking to get the full advantage of these speakers. I have the kappa Five amp, 4 channel 52w rms and a 300w mono block sub amp built in. I run the exact same set up in both cars. The only difference is that one has an 8 inch sub, and one has a 10 inch sub. I also am running Kappa perfect components which sound fan freakin tastic. Bottom line.. buy these or any other Kappa/Kappa Perfect Series and you are on the money for some really good sound. I really like the connection terminals that come with all kappa series speakers. It just feels so solid using the clamp down connections on these speakers. NO soldering, no crimping, no electrical tap, just a good solid connection. If you can help it make shore you buy the Kappa subs as well viewing the fact that they have the same kind of set up. I have reference series subs and they while good, you get your regular shoddy connection terminals that you have to fuss over to get a good connection. I have always been a fan of Infinity, but every time I buy another product I start lovin them more.
