WOW! the perfect balance of portability and sound quality, August 24, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

Having owned a number of portable, rechargeable sound systems, I can tell you that the iHome Rechargeable Mini Speakers have finally found that delicate balance between portability and sound quality. These are the speakers I now carry in my computer bag wherever I go!

If you’ve never seen the iHome rechargeable speakers in person, you’re in for a treat. A truly ingenious design, these speakers are extremely lightweight, and small enough to throw in your computer bag without taking up much space. The base of each speaker is magnetized, with notches that let the speakers attach to each other as a single small unit that can be stored in the included carrying pouch along with the audio/USB cable. When you’re ready to use them, just separate the speakers, twist each speaker from its base, and the speaker expands like a spring to give greater bass (low-end) response. Each speaker is individually powered by a rechargeable lithion ion battery, and you have individual power switches and LED power/charging indicators on each unit. A single cable (with an included plastic wire organizer) connects to each speaker (labeled Left and Right), to your standard headphone audio port, and to any USB port to recharge the speakers.

But what really amazed me is the audio quality for such a small, relatively inexpensive unit. WOW! While no one would confuse these with full-size speakers, they are amazingly clear and crisp, with strong midrange and good high-end. When expanded, you get a hint of the low-end, although you won’t be rocking any dance floors. And, surprisingly, the volume output is very strong. It is enough to fill a medium-sized room, especially without background noise. Not only is the volume from these speakers significantly louder than the built-in iPad and iPhone speakers (one would expect that), it is MUCH louder than the built-in speakers on my MacBook Pro.

And, even after several hours on a single charge, these speakers keep running. Simply amazing considering how small and lightweight they are.

For many years, I would carry a *much* larger and *much* heavier Logitech mm50 in my carry-on luggage. But, now with the iHome Rechargeable Mini Speakers, the mm50 stays at home. Yes, the bass (low-end) performance of the mm50 was better, and the volume a bit louder. But not THAT much better to justify the added weight and bulk.

I’m not sure how well the twist-to-lock feature will hold up over time, but at this price point, I’m willing to find out.

In short, I can’t find any fault with these speakers, given their combination of size, sound quality, portability/weight, and innovative design. Even more of a testament, EVERY one of my friends who has seen and heard these in person has rushed out to buy a pair of their own.

Personal speakers for an IPOD, July 25, 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

I received these speakers via the Vine Program. They are an inpressive set of speakers for their size and portability. When they are collapsed (accomplished by pushing down and twisting to lock in place)they measure 2 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall. They do lock together to form a tube that is 2 inches wide by 3.4 inches long (the interlock saves a small amount of space). They are held together that way by magnets (no not place them on anything sensitive to magnetic fields).

Here are the good points that I found:
    1. They are very compact and easy to use.
    2. They use rechargable batteries that charge from a powered USB port (or your IPAD adapter for AC).
    3. Each speaker has its own power switch with a blue indicator LED to let you know when it is on.
    4. They have decent sound at a volume that goes almost to the max of the output of the IPOD.
    5. There is one cable that has two mini connectors for the speakers, a stereo jack to fit your IPOD or similar device, and a USB plug to provide power to the unit or to charge it (you can charge the speakers at the same time you are using it).

Here are the negative points that I found:
    1. These are definately personal space speakers and will not provide a lot of sound in a noisy or large room.
    2. The base response from these speakers is nothing to write home about. Yes, it does provide a nice level of sound and fair response, but there are no deep base response attributes to them.
    3. The all in one cord while convenient, does not make for a neat installation. Unless you are charging your speakers at the same time you are using them, you will have the loose USB section of the cord to contend with.
    4. The length of the cord that goes from the speakers to your IPOD is fairly short (about 27 inches).
    5. The length of seperation for the speakers is only about 27 inches. Again, fine for personal space, but not so much for a room.

Overall, if you are looking for speakers that are very portable, easy to pack, and that will provide you with relatively decent sound for a small space (dorm room at most or a desk at work or hotel, then these speakers should do the job nicely for you.

After reading a number of reviews I ended up purchasing these speakers. All in all I’m very pleased with them. The sound is outstanding for a speaker in this price range, the size and weight make them easy to travel with, and the built in rechargeable battery will keep going for several hours at least (the battery has not run out yet). The only down side is the hiss. The speakers will make an audible hiss when powered by the USB cable. The hissing is definitely noticeable over the music. The solution is to plug the speakers in only to charge them, them unplug the USB for listening. Other than that they’re great.

    Pros:
    Compact, lightweight
    Great sound
    Significantly louder than laptop speakers

    Cons:
Noticeable hiss when using USB cable
