Great addition to my system., February 11, 2010

Not many people know that their Macbooks (and other Mac laptops) have a hidden optical (digital audio) output jack buried deep in their laptop’s headphone jack. I read about it recently, so bought this cable — from “eforcity” (vendor) who put it in the mail the same day — just to see if it was true. I have a Pioneer VSX-D509 home theater amplifier (bought it in 2003 or so) which had one open Optical input on the back (the little 1/4″ square port that has a “door” that pushes out of the way).

I connected to the amp, set the Optical 2 input on the amp to CD-R, then plugged in the 3.5mm optical end of this cable to my Macbook Pro. Now my little laptop output 5.1-channels (and more) when watching movies, including downloadable ones, like on Netflix.

In fact, my wife and I missed a recent episode of “Lost” and tuned into [...], found it, and watched it to multi-channel surround.

iTunes has never sounded so good, too. There is absolutely NO HUM like you can sometimes get from “component jacks” and 3.5mm stereo plugs (red and white RCA jacks).

    Such an improvement.

My Mac G5 tower has standard TOSLINK in and out on the back, so I bought those the next day to complete my system. I am quite pleased.

PC Computer Sound Card to Speakers/Receivers: THIS IS YOUR CABLE SET!, April 23, 2011

This review is from: Digital Optical Audio TosLink to Mini TosLink Cable M/M, 12 FT / 3.7 M, Black (Electronics)

I titled this review specially because you know how people get confused so easily with these Toslink and Mini-Toslink cables? Well I didn’t want there to be any discrepancy with regard to exactly WHAT these cables are all about: These are for PC sound cards in your computer, and certain types of stereo receivers use them also (not often, but sometimes this is the case), and they are NOT two Toslink adapters…this is the Mini-Toslink (pencil-thin non-shielded plug in) to Toslink (regular 1/2-oval to square connector that *snaps into place*) cable, so do NOT be confused about what you are getting here.

If you have a PC sound card to connect to something else, chances are about 100% that the PC sound card will accept ONLY one of these cables, and not a Toslink cable connector…that’s the wrong type, only Macs use regular Toslink connectors! End of discussion! My PowerMac G5 server and my Mac Pro power-machines both use the standard Toslink connector for sound output, but NOT PC’s! PC’s have real sound cards, and those will take this Mini-Toslink cable adapter every time!! Do NOT try and fit a regular Toslink cable to a Xonar Essence ST or STX Sound card, or an X-Fi Titanium HD Audio Sound Card either…it won’t work: this setup here is the one you want, so punch the button, and order it because this setup is exactly what you need!

Now that is out of the way I can talk about EforCity and their shipping and quality practices, and I can report that they get 5-Stars all across the board for every part of the process of getting these cables handled. I ordered my cable on a Saturday evening, and had the cable IN MY HANDS by Thursday afternoon following, and BAM! Installed the cable from PC sound card to my Logitech Z-5500 Dolby 5.1 THX Surround Sound Speaker System, saw the red glow of the sound port happily before connecting the setup, and BAM again! Home Run Out Of The Park!

The shipping in California is 1st Class US Mail for regular non-expedited shipping, and that is all you need with this company, as they ship the cables in plain brown wrapper padded US Mail envelopes, and have Delivery Confirmation on the parcels too, so you’re protected and so are they and the shipment… so all around a good, adequate FREE SHIPPING practice by EforCity Cable company! Can’t beat FREE right? RIGHT!

The cable itself is nothing fancy, no extra red and blue colored wrappers and candy-cane cable snappers here, this is a plain black cable with a metal-reinforced end piece which is more than adequate for carrying digital sound from the sound card to the speakers, receiver, whatever port you are setting it up for, just a good quality cable that does the job adequately for a very, very cheap price! You cannot beat their price per cable with free shipping can you? Didn’t think so! I know I am sure happy with the price, the shipping, and the quality of the cable, so what more can you say: SUCCESS IS GRAND!

The cable itself is nice and FLEXIBLE also, it’s not a rigid cable by any means, and will snake around your computer and tight corners with ease, unlike some hard-pressed cables. This setup is nice treat for computer sound cards and speaker systems and receivers, trust me it works great! Again it’s plain black rubber with a nice ABS plastic connector with a metal tip on the cable for clarity of sound, and it has a cable cover to boot for when you’re not using the end so you can shield it adequately—nice construction!

It turns out that EforCity ships out of Southern California for Southern California shipments, possibly drop-shipped for all I know, but the grand effect is that shipments get sent US Mail 1st Class, Delivery Confirmation in the house, and they get to the customer QUICKLY!

So one more time, this is the Mini-Toslink to Toslink connector cable that works for PC Sound Cards and the like, it’s NOT Toslink to Toslink! Get yours today for your Creative and Asus sound cards, and buy from EforCity because They ROCK! I give them 5 Stars across the board for an xlnt cable, great and fast shipping, and pricing that just can’t be beat at less than $10 per cable for the 12-foot size!

This was the best $$’s I ever spent on a computer part/purchase for my PC No.1, and its new Asus Xonar Essence ST PCI Sound Card, and it connects things up with my Logitech Z-5500 speakers perfectly fine…no complaints, and a solid endorsement from Wavey Davey for EforCity Cables! Get yours today!!

I used the TosLink to Mini TosLink Cable Digital Optical Audio TosLink to Mini TosLink Cable, 12 FT along with an additional 25-foot toslink cable RiteAV – Digital Optical Toslink Cable 25ft.and optical extension couplerOptical Extension Coupler to connect my iMac to my home theater. I bought all the cables and connector for practically nothing compared to retail on Amazon. It sounds fantastic–huge improvement over wireless (bluetooth) or RCA connections. Don’t waste money on expensive cables. The cheap ones carry the digital signal just as well.
