Excellent speakers for their size,
This is an excellent $300 (less refurbished) self-amplified bass/two satellite speaker system. Simply plug into your computer and play. The tonality of voices and instruments is realistic, almost as if you were there. The speakers capture a great deal of detail. When the three Roche sisters sing the Hallelujah chorus, the three voices are very distinct as are the voices and instruments in the Temptations Papa Was a Rolling Stone, or the multiple thematic lines in Bernstein’s recording of the slow second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The bass is present without being intrusive unless it is intended to be intrusive. Small group and big band jazz are wonderful.
How good are these speakers? I thought I could tell the difference between the two pianos used by Kate and Marielle LeBeque in their recording of Scott Joplin rags until I tested and realized that the difference was the difference in hearing in my right and left ear. If I listened with only my right or only my left ear the pianos sounded the same.
Although the speakers are small, I used them in a music discussion to a class of twenty. The soundstage was wide, the instrument placement specific, the sound clear and loud enough.
One caution. Turn the volume on your computer all the way up and use the enclosed volume control to modulate the volume. No hum. When I ran the speakers directly off my computer, I got hum.

|Sats were great but sub was dead on arrival. Ordering a replacement. Update 10/14/11,
When I hooked these up to my pc, the sats would play but not the subwoofer. I returned the original one and am ordering another. If the second one doesn’t work, I’m gonna try something else. The satellites got LOUD and sound good, though. They might almost be too much for near PC listening, but the volume is easy to adjust.
A couple other things : stands are included unlike what a Cambridge Soundworks salesperson told me on the phone, and also included is a small corded volume control pod. You can set the treble and bass volume separately from the back of the subwoofer.
So overall this should be a good system if the sub works on the next set I receive.
**UPDATE 10/14/1l**
Okay, I got my 2nd set of these speakers but am not allowed to write a separate review. After using these for a week, I can say that the subwoofer definitely adds something. One thing I want to mention is that the subwoofer is sealed (no ports) instead of ported. All the earlier subwoofers I have used were ported (had a port for routing air out of the subwoofer). The advantage of porting a subwoofer (in my experience) is that the low, drawn out frequencies travel farther. However, with this sealed subwoofer, the beats are accentuated more heavily (as there’s no air escaping from inside). I rather like the design Cambridge Soundworks has used (sealed sub).
This set also has the ability to get very loud (the satellites they use are also used in some of their home theater sets). I haven’t used this set much for movies but I think the subwoofer would do well with this as long as the room isn’t too big. If you have a small room, this set is almost overkill. You may want to check out the mid-priced computer set Cambridge Soundworks offers instead.
My brother tried turning up the subwoofer dial on the back of the subwoofer, and he said that while the sound quality remains good, the subwoofer begins to move around from all the vibration. For those wondering, yes, this subwoofer can hit pretty hard. It’s only advertised to go down to 32 hz however, but I haven’t found this to be much of an issue for me.
The satellites themselves are very good. The control pod that comes with the speaker set has only one knob for controlling the volume. You will probably need to turn the volume up 1/4 turn before you will hear any sound. To adjust the treble and bass separately, there are separate knobs on the back of the subwoofer.
I really like this set, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good quality music and sound, but is not ready to pay $1,000 or more for it. I haven’t been able to find any other great quality computer speaker set like this anywhere for this kind of price.

|Great Sound, Outstanding Price,
I have owned Cambridge sound systems before and the little system I received was not a disappointment. Great bass clear mids and highs plus it is easy to install. This is an excellent choice for a bedroom when you don’t want the hassle of runnining wires everywhere and would like to have a few bucks left over to purchase popcorn.
